Current situation for agricultural land Despite rumour to the contrary European Union members can buy agricultural land in Hungary. The current situation is that restrictions are in place to prevent large foreign companies buying up large tracts of agricultural land for intensive farming. Hungary has a long history of efficient agriculture despite the temporary communist collective farm initiative which was subsequently dismantled. Farms are being sold to foreigners who can give evidence of knowledge and practice of independent farming. What is not allowed to anyone, including Hungarians, is to buy a couple of hectares of agricultural land and build a house, permission will not be given. Permanent residenceIf you wish to make a property in Hungary your primary residence, bring a family and to work you will find this is restricted to countries which offer reciprocity. So if the country you are from allows Hungarians to come and work without restrictions, then you can come to Hungary and do the same. Examples of this are the UK, Sweden and Finland. Otherwise it is necessary to apply for a work permit.
